Bright purple steps at the side of Saba’s lead to a colorful and cozy addition to the Village – Purple Corkscrew wine room and lounge, formerly a tearoom. Seating in the main room is perfect for a couples’ night out. A separate lounge room accommodates larger groups, and may be reserved for special functions.
Owners Steffini Bethea and sister Kellie Owens started in business on a small scale, hosting Girls’ Night Out wine socials for friends. “They were such a success, and as we learned more about wines we thought about opening a wine bar,” said Bethea.
Neither was in a rush to give up her day job – Bethea in education, and Owens in human resources. First they wanted to learn more about the practical business end of wine. Knowing the value of hands-on training, Bethea worked part-time at Alons and Owens at Houston’s. Their hard work paid off, and they opened for business during the summer.
Purple Cork Screw features a wide selection of international wines by the glass. For Saturday brunch from 9-1 Bethea and Owens whip up crab cakes and yummy shrimp and grits, along with their signature sweet and savory crepes. Beer lovers haven’t been overlooked. Choices include Red Stripe, Stella, and Duvel and other international brands.
Future plans for Purple Corkscrew include retailing bottled boutique wines. “Once we have our retail license customers will be able to purchase a bottle of the wine they enjoyed here,” adds Owens.
