Open Streets 2016: Picture Perfect!


The bands played, the drummers drummed, kids of all ages paraded in their Halloween best. They made kudzu wreaths and puppets and climbed walls. Neighbors and friends  watched daring circus performers and sampled Village food and brews. Jimmy John’s Replacing Gas Station

Emory Village has been on the radar of Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches’ franchisee Jimmy Pineda for more than six years. He expects the wait to be well worth it.

By this Thanksgiving Pineda and his business partners aim to reach their goal of opening a Jimmy John’s in the long-vacant Chevron station on North Decatur Road and at the same time contributing to ongoing revitalization of the Village.

That transformation of the gas station began this week with the removal of the canopy. Soon to follow will be installation of new windows and other exterior and interior improvements including a kitchen and seating for about 20 inside and 6 to 8 outside. New trees and other plantings will compliment the nearby roundabout and Village streetscape.

“We are super excited to transform the distressed gas station into something the community can be proud of,” says Pineda. When it opens before the end of the year, the site will have 13 parking spaces plus bike racks on the east and west side of the building. Cars will enter at the North Decatur Road entrance and exit on Oxford Road.

Jimmy John’s is known for “freaky fast” delivery, mostly by delivery people on bicycles.

Pineda expects delivery by bicycle to account for 35% to 40%  of their business, based on the track records of  other Jimmy John’s in Atlanta. Most sell an average of 1,200-2,200 sandwiches a week.

“Our delivery business is our niche,” Pineda says. “Nobody else delivers a single sandwich order. We don’t want to add to traffic and pollution with cars. We’ve found that delivery by bike is faster and reduces the need for parking spaces.

“We are more than just another sandwich shop,” he adds. Jimmy John’s specializes in “from-scratch food made with excellent ingredients,” including locally sourced produce delivered daily, bread baked every three hours, wild-caught tuna, and meats and cheeses delivered throughout the week and sliced by hand daily. Sandwiches are priced between $3.99 and 5.99, plus a 30-cents delivery charge per item.

Tying in with the university community, the CDC and the neighborhood is key to the chain’s business “We’re thankful for the opportunity and want to be connected to and contribute to the community and be part of the changes in the Village.”

IMG_2600Pineda and his partners Chris Coulter and Grant Lawson are former bankers who moved to Atlanta eight years ago during the Great Recession, leaving the corporate world behind to become entrepreneurs. They lived in Coulter’s aunt basement apartment at first but in 2008 opened their first Jimmy John’s franchise in Midtown. Today their group, Jimmy John’s of Atlanta, LLC is the majority Jimmy John’s franchisee in Georgia. The Emory Village shop will be their 14th in the Atlanta area and will be managed by Malcolm Large.
